Should You Coast or Brake Into Corners?
Braking then coming off as you turn in is the most common mistake there is. Where to release the brake, the banking exceptions, and why coasting kills grip.

I constantly get asked this by drivers, and even more by parents of drivers. Okay Alessio — but where should he hold the brakes? Until where? Should he already be on the throttle here? Should he hold the brakes until the apex, or come off before it?
The honest answer is that it depends on the corner. I'd be fooling you if I said you have to do one thing all the time — that's not how racing works. Racing is more an art than a science, so you always adapt to each corner and to the track conditions, because it's never exactly the same twice.
Know the corner's DNA before you decide
Some corners are textbook — you just apply the theory. A 180-degree hairpin where you make the geometric line, apex at the mid-corner, open the entry and open the exit.
But you may notice that corner has a lot of banking, and that the banking sits on the inside. In that case you're better off turning in slightly earlier than normal to catch the banked part, and everything shifts a little from the standard geometric line.
That's why you do track walks. You need deep knowledge of the track: the elevation changes and the banking, whether it's positive or negative — most of the time it's positive, so it gives you more grip.
You need to know the corner DNA, not just the track DNA.
The default: brake late, and trail to the apex
So — is it a heavy braking zone because you arrive at high speed? If yes, then 90% of the time you brake really late and hold the brakes pretty much to the apex. That varies a bit by category, but you want to be on the brakes not only in a straight line but also as you begin turning in. That's trail braking.
And here's the thing: if you brake really late, holding the brakes is the only way to stop by the apex. Turning the wheel doesn't slow you meaningfully — yes, it scrubs a little speed, but nowhere near what you need.
The mistake almost everyone makes
The common error is braking in a straight line and then coming off the brakes the moment you turn.
Release as you turn in and you unload the front, put the weight back on the rear, and in vehicle dynamics that's understeer. No rotation — you just get pushed wide.
Trailing keeps the front loaded, which gives you rotation. And in karting you rarely have too much rotation, because the rear axle is fixed and there's no differential like a car has. If you go in slowly, the rear simply pushes you — it picks up far more grip than the front and you don't rotate. So a bit of extra rotation from heavy, late braking trailed to the apex is usually a good thing.
But rotation isn't even the main reason. The main reason is simpler:
If you come off the brakes as soon as you start turning, you could never have braked as late in the first place.
"Until the apex" is a rule of thumb, not a rule
When I say hold to the apex, that's a rough estimate. Sometimes you have to prioritize the exit because there's a long straight after, so you want to be on the gas at the apex — or one or two meters before it. Which means you're already off the brakes, releasing maybe two, three or four meters before the apex.
It's a rule of thumb. The real test is this: you should be arriving at the apex still on the brakes because you were so late braking. If you're thinking "I'm at the apex, I need to be off now", you probably weren't late enough.
By the apex you should ideally be off the brakes, because that's when the throttle comes in. Normally I get on the throttle at the apex or even a meter or two before. It's very rare to go on the throttle after the apex — I can't really recall a corner where you'd do that, unless you overshot.
The actual trigger: maximum rotation
Here's my rule of thumb for the throttle. When the kart has completed its rotation and is giving me the chance to go, and I know I won't be pushed wide — that's when I go on the gas.
So it's the peak point of rotation, which happens in the mid-corner and most of the time before the apex. As soon as you feel the kart has rotated nicely, you pick up the throttle. That's for a single corner, of course — a double apex or a chicane is different.
And if you reach the apex without having rotated the kart — because you turned in too early, or you had to stay tight after an overtake — then you can't go on the gas before the apex, because it'll push you out even more. It's all relative to how much rotation you actually got. That's exactly the failure chain in the overslowing signature.
Everything goes hand in hand: brake late, trail to the apex, generate load on the front, generate rotation — and that automatically lets you get on the gas earlier, because you've also stopped the kart more efficiently.
Think of it in numbers. Say the maximum you can carry through that apex, with your tires and the grip available, is 60 km/h. Try to carry 61 or 62 and you'll miss the apex or slide. To arrive at exactly 60 you have to hold the brakes a little longer. Then, once you're there and the rotation is complete, you pick up the gas.
I don't want to over-specify this, though. Everything happens fast and instinctively, and I don't want kids becoming robots — with a coach or mechanic or dad saying "go on the gas at maximum rotation, about two meters before the apex, because Alessio said so." You have to let the driver feel it. The job is to equip them with the technique knowledge: in a slow corner arrived at from high speed, trail the brakes to the apex.
When you don't trail all the way
That default isn't universal. In a medium-speed corner, or a slow corner with no straight before it — where you're already slow because there's another slow corner right ahead of it — you may not need to trail at all. You might just tap the brakes, or simply lift.
The other exceptions are worth knowing:
- Heavily banked corners: release the brakes, catch the banking, and let the kart rotate on its own. The banking gives you both the rotation and the grip, so you don't need to generate rotation from the brakes.
- Double apex corners: you want to carry a lot of speed between the two apexes, so you don't brake too much — though usually the better fix is simply braking later.
I felt this clearly in cars. I drove Zandvoort a few times in F3, and at turn one there's so much banking that you brake really hard but can get off the brakes a couple of meters earlier than you would at a flat geometric corner. You still trail quite a lot, but the banking rotates the kart — or the car — for you.
Combine braking and turning — and measure it
So to repeat the one thing that matters: you don't want to brake and then come off the brakes the instant you turn. You need to combine braking and turning.
The more combined I do, the faster I normally am. That's genuinely how I judge whether I did a good job in a corner.
Brake really hard in a straight line, then hold the brakes as you start to turn in. That creates the flex in the chassis, and it helps lift the inside rear wheel — which helps everything else.
You can see it in PURPL's trail braking section. What you're looking for is an overlap between your brake input and your lateral G. If the overlap is there, you trailed nicely — you were braking and turning at the same time. If it isn't, you're not trailing enough, which means you're not using the grip limit available to you.
And that's exactly what the friction circle is telling you.
The tires are meant to trail brake. They want you to trail brake. Brake in a straight line, yes, but keep holding as you move into that lateral load.
Why coasting is worse than it looks
Chase that feeling rather than avoiding it. It's a skill you build, and you build it through exposure — pushing yourself, experiencing it, making mistakes. When you first try holding the brakes you might miss corners, spin, or put a wheel on the grass. No worries. Keep pushing, and it becomes automatic, subconscious, something you no longer think about. It's the same process as getting over the fear of braking hard.
The reason this matters so much is what coasting costs you. When we get very young kids at our summer camps, four or five years old, I can see immediately that they're not used to using the brakes — they just lift off and let the engine braking slow them for the corner. And because they never really slowed down, they're forced to accelerate very early.
That produces no flex from the chassis and no rotation. So they lose on the entry, lose in the mid-corner, and lose on the exit.
Then there's the part almost nobody connects to coasting: tire temperature. If you're not stressing the tires, they don't warm up. In winter that's brutal — no temperature means no grip, and you'll only find grip on the last lap, which is far too late.
The only way to warm tires is to push them at the edge of the friction circle. When you coast you're massaging the tires. You want to stress them.
That's another reason to be super late on the brakes and hold them: it's how you build temperature, and temperature is how you build grip.
So go out and try braking super late. You'll find that braking late forces you to hold the brakes, and you'll end up trail braking naturally — which automatically kills the coasting habit. Have a look at the trail braking section and the friction circle afterwards and see it for yourself.
