Rolling Speed: How to Carry Mid-Corner Speed in a Kart

Carrying less speed feels like a better exit, and it isn't. Why mid-corner momentum lifts the inside rear wheel, and the 0.1s transition that creates it.

If you want to win, there's no way around it: you've got to be really good at carrying lots of mid-corner speed.

Entry speed is key. Exit speed is key too, especially when there's a long straight coming up. But mid-corner speed is something you have to prioritize — particularly in the corners where you don't have much of a straight afterwards, and you care more about entry and mid-corner than about squeezing the last bit out of the exit.

Why low minimum speed actually ruins your exit

Take a track like Franciacorta, going up into turn two. It's one of those corners where you can't really plan for the exit. Instead you have to drive hard into it and carry a lot of entry and — mostly — minimum speed, so that you end up with a better exit anyway.

Because funnily enough, it works the other way round from how it feels.

If you carry a low minimum speed you'll get a worse exit, because you'll feel tempted to go early on the throttle.

And when you get on the throttle, you put weight on the rear. That creates understeer on the exit, so you don't have the rotation ready for the change of direction into the next corner.

It's the same through sector two, where there are lots of mid-speed corners you can't play for the exit. Going into turns nine and ten, the double right-hander, you have to carry a crazy amount of mid-corner speed. If you're too slow there, again you're tempted onto the throttle early — and turn ten is downhill, so early gas creates push understeer on the exit and a really bad change of direction into turn eleven, the left-hander.

In many cases mid-corner speed simply has to be monumental if you want fast lap times. But it's something you have to feel. You can't think your way through it — you develop the skill and the habit of carrying tons of mid-corner speed, and only think about sacrificing it when there's a long straight ahead.

U-shaped or V-shaped — in speed, not in line

When the exit does matter more, you favor a more V-shaped corner in terms of speed, not in terms of line. In terms of line, KZ drivers do drive more V-shaped. But in terms of the speed trace, the U-shape is the way to go for single-speed karts with no gears.

Shifters can afford to stop the kart more at the apex, in a V-style speed shape, because the gearbox pulls it back. Single-speed karts — Junior, Senior, anything Rotax or IAME X30, and of course 60 Mini — need to keep the momentum up. And the only way to keep momentum, and therefore RPM, is to open up the arc of the corner as much as possible and carry as much speed as you can.

You do have to find the right trade-off. Carry too much mid-speed and you'll lose out on the exit — or you'll just make the kart slide. The goal is the maximum mid-corner speed available for that grip level, with those tires, in that moment. Not more.

Some specific cases worth knowing, and they follow the corner types directly:

  • Single corners with no long straight after: mid-speed has to be crazy high.
  • Double apex corners: carry a huge amount of speed into the first apex — you still have plenty of time to slow the kart before the second apex and get a good exit. There are many at Franciacorta and it pays off.
  • Chicanes, especially tight ones: the opposite. Carry less minimum speed so you can focus on the exit of the second part. A chicane is all about the trade-off.

The RPM argument

With single-speed karts your momentum relies entirely on the speed you carry at the apex, and your RPM massively affects your torque and acceleration on exit.

At turn two in Franciacorta, if your minimum RPM is 9,000 versus 9,400 — that 400 difference is huge for acceleration out of the corner. You'll pay for it all the way down the straight that follows. Reading the RPM trace is one of the clearest ways to see whether you're actually keeping momentum or just think you are.

Of course, if you carry more minimum speed and higher minimum RPM but your exit is bad, that's not the trade you want either. The goal is both: high minimum speed and RPM, and a good exit.

The real reason: a kart has no differential

Here's the concept you have to understand, especially in single-speed karts. There is no differential in a kart. Formula cars and GT cars have one; we don't.

A differential controls the speed of the rear wheels. The inside rear has to travel a shorter, slower arc, and the outside rear a wider, longer, faster one. The differential lets that happen. In karts we don't have that luxury — and thank god, because that's what makes karts so cool, so fun and so challenging to drive.

Since you have no differential, the way to rotate the kart is to turn on three wheels. The wheel that has to come up is the inside rear.

When you lift the inside rear, it turns more slowly than the outside wheel, which spins faster. That generates rotation. And when you generate rotation you can get to the throttle sooner, because your steering is already straight at the exit. That's lap time.

So the whole goal is to lift the inside rear wheel — even slightly — to pick up good rotation and get a better exit.

How you actually create the lift

Setup plays a part. Front geometry matters — how much caster and camber you run. So does the rear: which axle, the rear track width. Front track width makes a difference too. But most of the effect comes from the driver.

Try lifting the inside rear while going slowly into a corner. It's not going to happen. It's literally impossible. The only way to lift that wheel is by carrying a truckload of speed — mid-corner speed.

It feels counterintuitive: carry less speed and you think you'll get a better exit. In reality you get worse rotation, and that hurts the exit massively.

Two caveats. First, chase the lift in slow, tight-radius corners — hairpins and the like. You can't chase a rear wheel lift in a fast corner, and honestly if it's happening there you probably have a setup problem. Second, the lift comes from weight transfer, and aggressive weight transfer comes from pushing hard into the corner: the weight goes to the outside, the inside rear unloads, and up it comes.

It's not only about momentum either. In a slow corner that you arrive at from a long straight and a heavy braking zone, hold the brakes and load the kart on the front, so you unload the rear and the inside wheel lifts more easily. It's all physics and vehicle dynamics, and I love this stuff.

What "rolling" really means — and what it doesn't

This is where people get it wrong. When I say rolling, I do not mean coming off the brakes and just rolling the speed like an amateur or a beginner would. That's the opposite of how you should drive.

In a hairpin you arrive at high speed: you brake late, you hold the brakes, and then you have a very small rolling transition — about 0.1 of a second, as I always tell my drivers.

You don't want a long rolling dead zone. It makes you slow, it kills your momentum, the grip gets you stuck there, and the kart never flexes to lift the inside rear.

But zero is wrong too. If you're on the brakes and then straight onto the gas with not even a 0.1 transition, that's no good either — you'll end up too early on the throttle, the kart won't load laterally, the chassis tubes won't flex properly, and you won't get the rotation.

The way I feel it in the middle of a corner: I hold the brakes, then I need that 0.1 transition where the kart loads laterally, flexes, and springs me out. If I don't let that load happen, the kart doesn't rotate — because loading is exactly what lifts the rear wheel.

And if you go on the gas too early, the lift tries to happen and then you put the wheels back down. Traction picks up, both rear wheels are planted, you effectively have double the grip back there, and it pushes you straight on. Two rear wheels down won't let the kart rotate the way one will.

Which sounds ridiculous, right? More wheels on the ground should be better — cars are faster than motorbikes through corners. But in mid-corner, believe me, three wheels beats four. So keep that transition to 0.1, 0.2 at most. It lifts the inside rear, it makes the speed profile more U-shaped than V-shaped, and it keeps the momentum. It's the same release skill as trail braking, just measured in tenths of a second.

The exception: banked corners

It depends corner to corner. Some corners have a lot of banking and no heavy braking zone, and there you genuinely do roll a lot of speed in.

Turns nine and ten at Franciacorta are a good example — it's positively banked, which we don't get much of in Italy. Most people call it nine and ten; I like to treat it as a single corner. You go in essentially flat out, make a tap on the brakes, and roll, carrying a lot of speed and using the banking. There your transition isn't 0.1 — it's more like a full second, because the goal is carrying huge entry and minimum speed. And you don't want to get on the gas too early, because it goes downhill and you'll generate push understeer.

Every corner and every track has its own technique. That's what makes racing so different from other sports: the conditions change, you have to adapt, and you can't treat every corner the same.

But the rule holds at both ends. Zero roll is not good — especially in a Mini, Junior or Senior kart where you're trying to get that rear wheel lift in heavy grip. In KZ it's a bit different: you V the corners more and you won't have as much rolling time, but you still need a tiny bit, because eventually you still want that inside rear to come up, just less.

Hands: push with the outside, don't pull with the inside

To keep a good minimum speed and keep the kart locked in mid-corner, you need to be pushing with your outside hand rather than pulling with the inside.

Pulling with the inside won't help you be smooth — it makes the rear overreact. Push with the outside hand, and keep smooth hands overall: the inside hand super smooth, barely doing any work, the outside a bit firmer. That push-versus-pull distinction is a bigger deal than most drivers realize, and it shows up in what steering data reveals.

What you can actually see in the data

Open PURPL and you can check whether you're carrying good minimum speed — against yourself in previous sessions, or against another driver if you have their data.

The main tell is the shape of the speed trace: U-shaped means you're carrying it, V-shaped means you're stopping the kart mid-corner, which drops your RPM and your momentum. That's really hard to recover in a lower-powered kart like a 60 Mini or a Junior. In Senior you pick momentum up more easily, but it's still all about momentum — slide a little, miss the apex, don't hold the brakes right, and you lose grip, lose momentum, the RPM drops and the exit suffers.

The best drivers brake the latest, keep the most momentum mid-corner, and still come out with great exits.

I do wish there were a channel that showed whether the inside rear actually lifted. You'd need speed sensors on both rear wheels, and that's not something we can add from our side — it would have to be on the kart. But short of that, you can see the U-shaped minimum speed playing out and watch whether your RPM stays up. That's momentum, and momentum is the keyword.

You have to build the trust first

Go out next session and force yourself to trust the kart and trust the grip level — to push yourself to carry that momentum and lift the inside rear.

It comes with confidence, and I'm not going to fool you into thinking you'll do it on day one. It's like asking someone who's just sat on a MotoGP bike for the first time to lean it over 60 degrees the way Marc Márquez or Valentino Rossi do after years of training. You can't expect that without the experience and the trust behind it — trust in yourself, and trust in the machine.

You can only do these things when the kart feels like an extension of your body. You have to become one with the kart.

So practice, practice, practice — but also push. Because the only way to become one with the kart is to push yourself there. If you never test your limits and you always drive inside your comfort zone, believe me, it will never happen. That's why a practice day needs a purpose rather than laps for their own sake.

Go out there and push your limits like crazy. You'll see the results, and they'll thank you in your data. Remember the keyword: momentum. Keep it up, get the rotation right in the mid-corner by lifting that inside rear — and you only do that by carrying a lot of speed.
