AI Coach vs Human Coach: What Each One Actually Does Better
AI parses millions of data points in seconds and never forgets a session. A human sees posture, hands and strategy no sensor captures. You want both.

As of 2026, artificial intelligence has arrived in pretty much any sector of society — and karting is not excluded. It's arrived in karting too. And even though karting has not been used to welcoming technological advancements like other forms of racing — obviously Formula 1 — karting has always been a bit more traditional, without so many technology innovations in the last 20, 30 years. But I'm sure that now, with AI, it's different.
Is it going to be taken over by AI? In a way that it's going to augment it. It's going to augment the people already in motorsport. I don't think it's going to replace the mechanics. I don't think it's going to replace the coaches. Obviously it's not going to replace the drivers. Everything is going to be augmented and improved by the use of AI. And what AI works through is data: if you have large sums of data to be analyzed, that's where AI shines. If you have no data captured, you will have no AI insight — and therefore no AI advantage.
What I'm talking about today is the comparison between an AI coach and a human coach. It's going to be hard to get an AI to do absolutely everything a human coach does — but at the same time, it's impossible for a human coach to replace an AI. Think about it: even now, Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini are so much more intelligent than pretty much anybody on earth in terms of general knowledge, and in terms of specific knowledge too. In some sectors they may not have had enough training data yet to be better than an expert — but I believe soon they will be far more intelligent than any human being in each field. And given that, I believe sectors like karting will still require the human touch. It's not going to be either-or.
If you can combine a world-class coach with a world-class AI, nobody can really compete with you.
That is exactly the reason I've invested all these months of work of my life in creating PURPL. I'm seeing it already on myself: every time I go driving and combine my own judgment with the AI that parses all the data my MyChron collects — it's just crazy, the results that happen. So let's look at the differences.
What a human coach sees that data never will
The human coach will always be able to understand the things that are difficult — almost impossible — to track with data. The driver's posture on the kart: whether he's leaning too far out or too far in. Whether he's grabbing the steering wheel the wrong way, pulling instead of pushing with his hands. All those things are going to be very hard for the AI to tell — you'd need a camera watching the driver from outside, able to interpret it, which is really hard. The same goes for overtaking and race strategy. That's not something the AI is going to do for you.
So the human coaches are going to thrive in this world. They're not going to be replaced by AI. Obviously, you need to go with a proper, successful human coach — you don't want to just pick the first one, because bad coaching is much worse than not being coached at all. That's what I always say: prefer to pay a little more for a proper coach than go with a cheaper one. Of course, in some areas it's very hard for drivers to even access a coach — I totally get it. Which is part of why the AI side matters.
What an AI coach does that no human can
An AI coach can do all the things a human can't. Humans can't parse, access and calculate thousands — even millions — of data points the way machines and algorithms can. By definition, large sets of data can only be analyzed by AI, especially in a short amount of time: 30 seconds, instead of waiting an hour for your telemetry guy to go through every single corner of every single lap and come back with a report and practical tips.
Think about all the sensors logged on your kart. The visible ones — the EGT that reads the temperature coming out of your exhaust, the water temperature sensor that tells you how hot your radiator is running. But also, inside your MyChron or your Alfano or your Unipro, there's a bunch of accelerometers and a gyroscope, together with GPS tracking your speed, your lateral and longitudinal acceleration. You get a lot of information from a MyChron — nowhere near a Formula 1 car with thousands of sensors, of course. In karting you could still add a brake sensor, a throttle sensor, a steering sensor — even though the MyChron ecosystem has its own, I've always found the steering one difficult to work with; it keeps needing recalibration, it's just not super accurate, but that's a story for another day. You could add tire temperature and tire pressure sensors too — but then you'd need an extra mechanic just to take care of all the sensors, which is hard in karting with limited time between sessions and limited people.
The point: more data translates into more feedback and insights, and more feedback and insights, 90 percent of the time, results in better lap time. Sometimes you get information overload — but if you can channel that information usefully, through experience of analyzing data, you create very powerful combinations that unlock real lap time and win races.
AI is able to do exactly that. For example, it can compute the standard deviation of your lines — how consistent they are. There's a feature doing that in PURPL right now: it tells you how consistent you've been on the racetrack, how many times you were able to match your line in a specific corner down to the centimeter — always relying on the GPS of the data logger you're using, but with the data it has, it can tell you: this lap you were one meter further from the white line than your average line. That's huge. You can track whether a different line worked out or didn't — maybe you made more distance, maybe you had less grip on that line. And you can compute the G-forces: the grip you had available in a session, whether you had too much or not enough, whether your lap time improved because of grip or in spite of it. You can have the AI build a friction circle that tells you, through the whole lap, how much grip you had available and how it compares to another session.
Same with the EGT, the RPMs, the water temperature. On the MyChron you may have the absolute values — maximum RPM, maximum EGT, minimum and maximum water temperature. What the AI shows you is corner by corner where each of those values is rising or falling, where you need to work on the driving, or where you can tune the kart to bring the values into range — getting to that performance sweet spot where everything is in the optimal operating window: the tires, the engine, and then obviously the driver. When everything is in the optimal window, that's when you set pole positions and win races. It also lets you build metrics — how consistent you were in a session, whether your lap times came early or late in the session — and visualize that. And then a coach view that goes corner by corner, identifies where you're losing the most time, and shows you on the map the lines for your perfect lap — plus your braking: whether your braking Gs are soft or strong, whether your brake trace is good or whether you need to trail the brakes more. Some of those things are doable in Race Studio 3 — but here you can visualize them differently, and the insights come to you.
Unlimited memory — the part nobody talks about
There's one more thing that comes with the AI: basically unlimited memory. Race Studio 3 is not going to remember whether your current major issue is your braking, your consistency, or your minimum speed. The AI records and stores all your data and its insights, and it remembers everything. It knows your current weaknesses as a racing driver, and it's going to remind you to work on those things, over and over, until you're perfect or close to it. A coach cannot have that unlimited memory — he has a lot going on in his life, and probably a lot of drivers too. He's going to forget things day by day, even session to session.
Ask the AI what you did wrong six months ago at Lonato, and it comes back with all the insights and the answers. Race Studio can't do that. Not even your coach can do that.
The memory side of it is just fascinating, and very valuable in my opinion. And of course AI is not perfect — it needs to improve, and it improves every day; new models keep coming out, both for the analysis and for the commentary and insights derived from the data it's given.
Unbiased, straight in your face
Another cool thing: it's unbiased. It's going to tell you things straight, with honesty — whereas sometimes your coach has an interest in making you feel happy, in pleasing you. That may not be what you need in that moment. You may need to be shaken up and told straight in the face exactly where you're losing time.
And sometimes mechanics and coaches see something that makes you lose time — but it's not the thing you should be working on right now. It's improvement area number four on the priority list. The coach sees that in one specific corner you're carrying too much speed at the apex and wants you to go slower — but maybe your main priority is to use more track on entry, use more brakes, get on the throttle a little earlier. With a human coach alone it's hard to classify and rank the priority areas properly. Seeing that ranking provided by the AI — the three biggest losses first — is really cool, and coaches just need to be open to using these tools, because their job becomes easier too.
They complete each other
So no — I don't feel it's going to be a replacement of the coach. It completes his job, and enhances it. And I feel really excited, because drivers are going to receive better coaching, with their coaching memory stored — it's going to democratize karting coaching in a way. Drivers won't need to rely only on the feedback of the few hard-to-access world-class coaches in the world; the tools can level up a less experienced coach toward world-class — regular coaching plus AI analysis is a different animal.
The workflow combines: the coach watching the driver on track, understanding where he's losing time and everything that is not data-trackable — the posture, the hand position, the leaning in and out, the hands technique. Those things are visual and experience-based, and until there's a camera system that can track a driver's body posture while driving and actually interpret it, they're impossible for the AI to even mention. That comes down to the coach and his human pattern recognition. The AI — PURPL, in this case — replaces and enhances most of the analytics work, going through the actual data. The intangible, experience-based coaching stays with the coaches, ideally the world-class ones.
And the coach should be totally okay with that. He shouldn't feel guilty about using an AI coaching tool to streamline the core improvement areas the driver needs to work on. He should use it the way any professional uses tools to develop their craft. A surgeon uses all sorts of tools for a surgery — he's not operating with his bare hands. Marketing professionals use analytics tools to track their visitors and campaigns. Everybody needs tools. Now, finally, coaches have a bunch of them at their disposal — so they can come up with better insights and provide better value to the end user: the driver himself.
