Dead loggers lose sessions you can't re-drive. Charging habits, storage rules and the weekend routine that keeps kart data logger batteries alive for years.

A dead battery doesn't just kill a screen. It deletes a session you can never drive again.
The data logger battery is the least glamorous part on the kart. But it's the only part whose failure erases information instead of speed. The habits that keep it healthy cost minutes a week.
Small, boring, repeated. The same discipline as the rest of the data layer. Here's the weekend routine, plus the winter storage rules that decide whether one battery carries you four seasons or barely survives its first.
Picture a Sunday morning. Warm-up starts in twenty minutes, the dash shows a flat battery icon, and the only cable in the toolbox fits the camera, not the logger.
The kart goes out anyway, because the kart always goes out. And every lap of that session vanishes, no trace, no overlay, nothing to answer the driver who swears the kart was loose everywhere. Gone.
It happens in every paddock, most weekends. Not a hardware problem. A habit problem, which is good news, because habits are free.
Know which battery you're caring for
Loggers run on three power setups. And the care rules differ for each one.
Sealed internal packs, lithium in anything modern, charged over USB or a dock, or replaceable cells, AAs and button cells, in the simpler dashes. And wired karts, where the logger drinks its power from a small onboard battery that also feeds hungry sensors like a heated lambda probe.

The charging habits that actually matter
Two things age lithium above all. Living at the extremes of charge, and heat. Every useful habit follows from those two facts.
Charge the night before the track day, not a week early, so you arrive full without the pack having sat at 100% since the previous weekend. Simple.
Top up at lunch if the day is long. Partial charges are friendlier to lithium than deep cycles, a point the canonical reference, Battery University's guide to prolonging lithium batteries, makes with charts. Little and often.
And never charge a pack that's just come off a hot kart in the sun. Let it cool first. Always.
Heat during charging is the fastest ager there is, and the trackside van in July is a battery oven.
The habit rhythm is the same one that keeps cameras alive: charge once a day, every day you run. It's the daily-charge routine from syncing video with telemetry, pointed at the logger. Make it part of packing the kart, not a separate thought, and it stops being a thing that can be forgotten when the day runs long.
A small charging kit kills most of these failures before they happen. Five things. Build it once, leave it in the data box, and never raid it for phone duty, because raided kits are how spares go missing.
- The unit's own charger and cable, not a borrowed one that nearly fits.
- A power bank for USB units, topped up the night before like everything else.
- Spare cells for replaceable-cell dashes, still sealed.
- A short extension lead, because the paddock socket is never near your awning.
- Tape and a marker, so a flat spare never goes back in the box unlabelled.
None of it is exotic. The kit just removes decisions from a tired Sunday brain, and tired brains are where flat loggers come from.
The mid-season killers
Three patterns kill logger batteries during the racing year. All avoidable.
Running to zero, repeatedly. A logger that dies on track mid-session deep-discharges the pack, and lithium hates sitting at the bottom of its range even more than it hates the top. If your unit regularly reads under 20% by the end of the day, add the lunch top-up before the habit costs you a session.
Cooking in the trailer. Units left on a dash in a closed van between weekends spend the whole summer sitting at exactly the heat that ages them fastest. Take the head unit indoors, the same one-minute habit from the install routine.
And the silent drain. Loggers that aren't fully powered off keep sipping. A unit stored "off" but glowing finds its own way to flat in a fortnight, then sits flat, and sitting flat is what does the real damage.
Winter storage: the half-full rule
The off-season ruins more logger batteries than the racing does.
Storing lithium full stresses it for months. Storing it flat can sink cells so low they never come back. The boring optimum sits in the middle.
Store around half charge, somewhere cool and dry. Give it a brief top-up check mid-winter. Battery University's charging guide covers the why; the practice is one calendar reminder in January.
One job before the unit goes in a drawer: pull the season's files off it, export the telemetry to CSV, and the data outlives the hardware whatever winter decides.
Replaceable-cell dashes get the simpler version: take the cells out before storage. A leaked AA has ended more vintage lap timers than crashes have.
Wired karts get the longest winter list, because the battery feeds a whole loom. Disconnect the onboard battery, store it charged per its chemistry, and label the date, because spring-you will not remember what autumn-you did.
While the battery is out, walk the loom once. Five minutes, kart on the stand.
- Unplug each connector, look for corrosion or the green dust that means water got in, and push each one back until it clicks.
- Follow the wiring with your fingers and find every spot where it rubs the chassis.
- Check the battery mount and its strap. Loose batteries don't last.
- Anything that looks tired gets fixed now, in the warm, not in a March panic.
The weekend telltales
Batteries warn you before they strand you. The warnings are data-shaped. So listen.
A unit that drops from full to half in one session has a tired pack or a silent drain, and both are cheaper to fix this weekend than next. A dash that resets over kerbs has voltage sagging under vibration. That's often the contacts rather than the cell, so clean them before condemning the battery.

Log battery level at day's end on the session sheet for a month and you'll know your unit's normal curve better than any manual could tell you. After that, any change from it is an early warning instead of a Sunday surprise.
Spares, and when replacement beats care
Care extends life. Nothing makes a battery immortal, so plan the ending.
For replaceable-cell units, spares in the toolbox are cheap insurance. For internal packs, find out early whether the battery is dealer-replaceable and what it costs, because that number decides how long the unit really lives.
A pack that holds half the day it used to is due, not dying. Do the swap before the championship rounds, not after the first lost session.

How long should a data logger battery last per charge?
A healthy modern unit covers a full race day with room to spare, often two. Know your unit's normal from a month of end-of-day logging, then judge against your own baseline rather than the brochure, because the brochure never raced in August.
If runtime suddenly halves, treat that as data. Something changed: the pack, a setting, or a new sensor drawing power. Find which before it finds you.
Should I leave the logger charging overnight every night?
Charge the night before track days and stop there. Permanent overnight charging parks the pack at 100% for its whole life, night after night, which is exactly the state lithium ages fastest in.
Charge for use, not out of habit. The pack doesn't need a bedtime ritual. It needs a purpose.
Why does my lap timer die in cold weather?
Lithium delivers less at low temperature. So a marginal pack that survives summer faints in a cold morning session. The cold didn't break it, the cold told on it.
Keep the unit indoors overnight and pocket-warm it before fitting. If cold mornings keep killing it, the pack was already on its way out.
Can I use a power bank to charge at the track?
Yes. For USB units it's the standard answer, and it removes every excuse for arriving flat. Charge the power bank with the same night-before habit, or you've not solved anything, you've just moved the dead battery one level up the chain.
Size barely matters for a logger; nearly any bank covers a weekend. What matters is that it lives in the charging kit, not in somebody's pocket.
